How Many Green-Tech Companies are Ready for the Stimulus Jolt?
March 31, 2009 by Ed Adkins
The money from the stimulus bill has started to flow. How many green companies and startups are poised to benefit from it?
In an article titled Green-tech pros gird for stimulus jolt, CNET author Martin LaMonica reported that stimulus money has begun making its way to companies specializing in sustainable technology, as part of a last-resort type of government funding meant to prop up green investment in leu of the troubled credit market.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu has revamped the DOE’s loan-vetting process to break the logjam of these loans, which many high-profile green-tech start-ups such as Tesla Motors and battery maker A123 Systems have applied for. Meanwhile, the government’s economic stimulus plan calls for $1.6 billion for research through the national laboratories and for investments to bulk up and modernize the transmission grid to transport solar and wind power.
In anticipation of a big inflow of money, green business people have reported spending a lot of time in Washington, D.C. Everyone–from small start-ups to established wind project developers–is hiring lobbyists to influence policy
But with so much anticipation of money comes competition for it. How many companies (both large and small) have prepared to compete for stimulus funds? While lobbyists in Washington focus on influencing policy, we reccomend that all organizations who are vying for part of the stimulus create a solid strategic plan that shows exactly how they would use such a loan.
If your organization was getting stimulus money tomorrow…
- How would you allocate the funds?
- Who would you need to bring on board to do the work?
- What changes would have to be made to your infrastructure?
- How long would it take for you to be ready?
- Where would you need to grow?
If your organization operates within an industry that stands to benefit from the stimulus package, answering these questions in a timely manor could mean a huge boost for your future.
